Curamericas Global improving healthcare in developing countries

Curamericas Global, Inc. (Curamericas), based in North Carolina, is an American nonprofit that works to improve health care programs and child survival rates in developing countries around the world.

Curamericas identifies needs and works together with local organizations in creating measureable, sustainable health care programs. The programs teach prevention and also establish health care clinics in areas where they are most needed.

Projects have been successfully completed in Rio Bravo, Mexico and Petionville, Haiti. Current projects are in Bolivia and Guatemala. Future projects will take place in Liberia.

A November, 2008 trip is planned for the country of Liberia. Curamericas is seeking 8 to 20 medical and non-medical volunteers to treat patients, train staff, build wells, and construct homes and other facilities. In 2005, Liberia had the 5th highest under-5 child mortality rate in the world. The new health partner in Liberia is The Ganta United Methodist Hospital, which serves over 450,000 people, including people from the neighboring countries of Guinea and Cote D’Ivoire.

In Bolivia, Curamericas programs have helped reduce the child mortality rate by over 62% in their project areas.

Some of the projects in Bolivia involve enlarging a clinic focusing primarily on neonatal, child and maternal health, working with local government authorities to extend rabies vaccination coverage, expanding home health visits, providing funds for the construction and for the equipment for medical clinics, managing a Red Cross approved clinic, and provided emergency water purification services and medical aid during recent flooding.

In Guatemala, Curamerica’s Dr. Mario Valdez is the only medical doctor for more than 66,000 people living in this project area. Guatemala has the third highest infant and child mortality rates in the Western Hemisphere.
