Radical forgiveness - Rwandan genocide murderers/victims

Could you forgive those who murdered your family? But even more, could you reconcile with them and accept them as neighbors?

As We Forgive Those” is a documentary by American producer/directory, Laura Waters Hinson, that examines the Rwandan lives of genocide survivors as they come face to face with the men who slaughtered their families. “Struggling to live again as neighbors, the subjects of this one-hour film discover the power and the pain of radical forgiveness.”

The 1994 genocide killed 1 in 8 Rwandans. Overwhelmed by a backlog of cases, the Rwandan government has returned over 50,000 genocide perpetrators back to the communities they helped to destroy. With no legal justice awarded, how have the victims and perpetrators reconciled? Can the church assist in the process of reconciliation?

“As We Forgive Those” examines those issues through a film about Anglican Bishop John Rucyahana’s radical reconciliation project of having ex-prisoners build homes for the family members of those they killed.

The film examines the issues of reconciliation through the real lives of Rwandans. “It’s a film about what Africa can teach us … Our hope is to inspire a wider discussion on the need for reconciliation in our personal lives, our institutions and even in our governments.”

Mia Farrow participated as a narrator of this documentary film.
