Tanzanian Children’s Fund helping orphans

The Tanzanian Children’s Fund (TCF), based in Portland, Maine, is an American charity that provides support to improve the lives of marginalized children in Tanzania, Africa through cooperation with local organizations. Most of the children supported by TCF have been orphaned because their parents died from HIV/AIDS.
TCF is working with the Rift Valley Children’s Fund, a NGO organized under the laws of Tanzania, to build an orphanage which will house 77 orphans and a Children’s Village which will consist of 15 buildings. A primary school was opened at TCF’s Children Village, and other improvements, such as septic systems are being constructed. The entire complex is planned for completion by the end of 2008.
A Farm Model Project is introducing better farming techniques (terraces, new varieties of crops, etc.), which will improve nutrition and provide income which can be used to purchase other essentials.
A micro-finance program has been launched and bi-monthly health clinics are conducted for the villagers.
Over 100 volunteers have come to the Children’s Village from the USA, Australia, U.K. and the Netherlands.
Information on donating, sponsoring a child, hosting a gathering of supporters, making quilts for the villagers, and other information can be found on their website.
