Stop Genocide Now (SGN) is an American organization that is dedicated to protect populations in grave danger of violence, death and displacement resulting from genocide. Through education, advocacy and policy change, SGN works to change the way the world responds to genocide.
The current focus of SGN is is the African Darfur crisis in Sudan and bordering countries, such as Chad.
Some statistics from SGN’s website:
* The death toll has reached up to 400,000 people since February 2003.
* More than 500 people die each day.
* More than 2.5 million people have been driven from their homes.
* More than 200,000 people have fled to refugee camps in neighboring Chad.
* 80% of the children under five years old are suffering from severe malnutrition and many are dying each day.
* Humanitarian aid organizations have access to only 20% of those affected.
SGN helps organize ‘Camp Darfur‘ events around the country to increase awareness of the Darfur genocide. Tents are set up where video clips of stories from refugee camps, speeches, slide-shows and other information on the crisis can be presented to event participants. Participants can also send messages of support to the refugees. Hawaii, Portland and Santa Fe are some of the recent locations of Camp Darfur events.
SGN is not a registered nonprofit organization, but instead receives donations through it’s financial sponsor, Emerge Arts Projects, which provides a nonprofit 501(c)3 charity to receive the tax deductible funds on behalf of SGN.
Volunteer suggestions and opportunities, donation and program information, including sponsoring a Camp Darfur event, is available on their website.
