U.S. relief aid for North Korean floods

An estimated 300,000 North Koreans have become homeless by recent floods, which have also devastated crops, bridges, roads, power and utility services.

Two non-governmental charities - Mercy Corps and Samaritans Purse - will receive $50,000 each from the U.S. Agency for International Development to aid North Korea in response to this massive flooding this summer.

Oregon-based Mercy Corps will send over $830,000 in relief supplies to North Korea, including blankets, food, medicine, clothes and water purification tablets. Ells Culver, founder of Mercy Corps, has made over 20 trips to North Korea and have an ongoing farmers exchange between North Korea and the Pacific Midwest.

Franklin Graham, son of Rev. Billy Graham, is President of Samaritan’s Purse. Today Samaritan’s Purse operates in over 130 countries using local cooperation to distribute medical aid, relief supplies to natural disaster victims, HIV/AIDS medication and education, community development projects and other assistance.
